Political Miftah means 'key'. Here, it's shorthand for The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy. To quote from their homepage: 'MIFTAH's aim is to serve as a Palestinian platform for global dialogue and cooperation guided by the principles of democracy, human rights, gender equity, and participatory governance. To this end, MIFTAH undertakes the pro-active generation and presentation of policy proposals and the focused dissemination of reliable information.' Despite this wordiness, the website gives great access to up-to-the-minute news reports from a variety of sources, plus plenty of archived information. Its links are vast. Mustafa Barghouthi, the Ramallah-based head of the Health, Development, Information and Policy centre (where we in ORFA first went for contacts in Ramallah), is a leading force in Miftah, as is the veteran woman leader, Hanan Ashwari. Al Haq was another starting-point for us, for contacts in Ramallah. "Al-Haq is an independent Palestinian non-governmental human rights organisation based in Ramallah ... Established in 1979 to protect and promote human rights and the rule of law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), the organisation has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council." "The Jerusalem Center for Women (JCW) is a Palestinian non-governmental women's center located in East Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Center for Women was founded [in 1994] simultaneously with the Israeli women's center Bat Shalom located in West Jerusalem. JCW and Bat Shalom carry out joint Palestinian-Israeli programs through a coordinating body known as the Jerusalem Link." We visited the Palestinian Working Women Society for Development (PWWSD) in Ramallah during the ORFA 'Women's Visit' in 2003. They took us to visit a group of village women in Sudra, and we donated the £3300 from NOW (Network of Oxford Women for Justice and Peace) to a project there. The website states "PWSSD is a Palestinian women developmental, secular and educational organization that seek to strengthen and empower women to participate in all political, social and economic fields..."
